The wonders of technology
I. Widow of MoHaa lodges official protestAlmost every week, certain
Wahj: ... The wives seem not to understand the sacred importance of MoHAA.[At this point, I conceded defeat because I couldn't think up any more references from The Lord of the Rings, plus I didn't want to get oil from barbecued chicken wings onto my cellphone.]
Me: The wives are all too aware of the power of the IDOLATRY that is MoHaa.
Wahj: Hissss! I banish thee! Begone!
Me: Ye idolaters shall be stoned unto eternal regret come Judgement Day!
Wahj: Don't make me use the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch on you ...
Me: I shall stake you and ye shall be dust.
Wahj: Only now, at the very end, do you realise the power of the Dark Side ... *zap lightning*
Me: You ... shall ... not ... PASS!! *boom*
Wahj: I will break the Wizard ... *swordbreaks in twobursts into flames*
II. Long-distance foreign language consultation
When puzzled over whether the Japanese characters on a purportedly Nike T-shirt in fact say, "Just do it", the best thing to do is to let Ondine take a picture with her camera phone, have her MMS the image to me, so that I can MMS it to a Japanese friend in a different timezone for a translation. And when that fails, the next best thing is to post the image on my blog:

JapaneseNike

kk --- Is this image clear enough for a translation? Does it say doko made ikeru ka, ganbare, faito or something else altogether?

One suspects that all it says is the transliteration of 'Nike'...

Terz is right. It says "Na-yi-ki" in katakana.

Cheh! That's so redundant.

Ahh... Wahj tried to stare my disapproval down today as well and convince me that we would rather the men, be at one place having PG 13 fun (seeing that they do have a 13 year old in their midst) than out somewhere boozing the night away. I still say *growl* with the *evil eye*.

Actually, what I said was "sword bursts into flames" - a reference to the Witch King in Return of the King - get it right! = )
.. and yes: would you rather the boys be out gallivanting on Friday nights, or having some good clean wholesome (fragging) fun, playing a simple, innocent computer game? = )- At 4/26/2005 7:33 AM Tym said...
wahj --- I stand corrected.
Btw, there's nothing wrong with a night of boozing. If anything, at least you guys would be getting out there with the rest of the world :P- At 4/26/2005 10:57 AM Terz said...
There is a rest of the world?
Hold me, Seymour, I'm scaaaaared.- At 4/26/2005 4:25 PM Packrat said...
Boozing = Bad Kidneys plus the added risk of throwing up on one's shoes + the possibility of socialising with unsavoury elements.
Gaming = Controlled, sterile environment.- At 4/26/2005 7:52 PM NARDAC said...
And that's supposed to make one choose gaming over boozing!? Picking a sterile controlled environment over alcohol is such a Singaporean comment! very very sad...
also a bit silly since most gamers I know are mad drinkers as well... so surely the comparison is incorrect.- At 4/29/2005 1:16 PM Terz said...
I have better argument:
Kids at MOHAA: 1 time per week, total 4-5 hours, late evening til late night.
versus
Exercising/stretching/various slimming-fit classes: 3 times fixed per week (with an additional 2 times, depending on whim and weather), total 6.5-7 hours, late afternoon til night.
Do the math.
