My version of the Sunday paper
I was saying yesterday that I don't usually wake up before noon on the weekends if I can help it, to which James responded with abject horror because he likes having the mornings to read the paper over coffee. My response: I don't get the paper (for background, see "Related Posts" below). On the other hand, I do "get" blogs. So today, for instance, over bread'n'jam and milk, this was my version of the Sunday paper:
- "Newspapers get into the preaching act", by Au Waipang of Yawning Bread --- A dissection of recent local media profiles of Singapore men who are self-professed virgins. Because what this uptight country needs is more sexophobia.
- "I'm not just an incubator", by Nick Kiddle of Alas, a blog --- This may come as a surprise to some people, but expecting mothers are human beings too.
- "Viggo and the impeachment buzz" , by Liz Sabater of culturekitchen --- I'd read any interview with Viggo Mortensen (hello, he's one of my celebrity crushes), but this is a real gem for all that it's about American politics rather than his movies. Bonus: An image of Mortensen wearing a T-shirt that reads, "Impeach. Remove. Jail." Your (political) mileage may vary.
- "What is Web 2.0", by Tim O'Reilly of Everything Tim --- Web 2.0 explained in terms even I can understand.
- "Imagine a world without copyright", by Joost Smiers and Marieke van Schijndel at the The International Herald Tribune (link via Arts & Letters Daily) --- Imagine, indeed. I'm an idealist at heart, don't you know.
- "The culture of celebrity", by Joseph Epstein at The Weekly Standard (link via Arts & Letters Daily) --- The most cerebral (and insightful) piece I've seen written about celebrity.
- "The tiger strikes again", by Neely Tucker at The Washington Post (link via Arts & Letters Daily) --- Who said "Calvin and Hobbes" was just a comic strip? Note to self: acquire the recently released The Complete Calvin and Hobbes on next bookstore excursion.
- And in closing, a quotable quote from Overheard in New York:
Girl: Yeah ... but I have my period, so we can't have sex.
Guy: That doesn't matter. See? It just shows that I love you.
Girl: What it shows is that you want head.

Or it could be someone who's been prejudiced by experience with far less worthy examples of teaching professionals. Doesn't excuse him though, the bugger.
*looks at list* now why can't we have a newspaper with topics and articles like that.
(rhetorical question, that)
