Spotted in a crowd
The thing about running into former students at Wine Bar is that, first of all, they bellowed my name loud enough that I immediately turned and fled the scene. (That is, not my name per se, but what they used to call me in school, Ms _____, hence also immediately distinguishing me as a teacher. Very cool --- not.)When the dust had settled and we had all caught up, there were the exclamations of how cool it was that I was still clubbing. Despite my age, I guess? Thanks, guys.
And then it turned out that one of these young punks had a Master's degree. Damn, I need to get me one of those.
Finally, we did a little math and realised that they're now the age I was when I taught them many moons ago. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Yes, the worst thing about meeting students is the way they yell your name across public spaces!
Still, it's nice to be remembered. :)- At 8/06/2006 12:47 PM tscd said...
You wouldn't want your students to address you by your first name, would you? It would be so...disrespectful.
I met my primary school teacher on the bus last year. When I told her I was married, she turned so pale that I thought she was going to pass out or vomit.- At 8/06/2006 3:08 PM Tym said...
Actually, I kind of insist that students call me by my first name rather than Ms _____ once they've left school. It's too weird otherwise. Of coruse, many of them can't quite do it or grin wryly when they do ...
I don't think it's so much an issue of respect with me, both in terms of how I address my former teachers as well as how I allow former students to adddress me. The respect's the same; it's probably the level of familiarity that's changed if we've shifted from a last-name to first-name basis of address.- At 8/09/2006 1:31 AM the lorider said...
