- A little armchair museum-hopping (December 14, 2006)
From a peephole in Chinatown to a "bleeding" angsana tree, from human skulls carved by Dyak headhunters to a Malay cartoonist --- the first episode of Explore Singapore! certainly shows a different and unexpected side of our museums. Part fiction, part documentary, the TV show dips into 4 museums over half an hour, which must be something of a new record. Read more
- Love among the ... (December 21, 2006)
While last week's episode of Explore Singapore! introduced us to English girl Sarah Thompson (played by Elizabeth Tan) looking for her mother in Singapore with the help of former museum curator Mr Heng (played by Moses Lim), this week's episode promises to delve into the relationship between Sarah's parents. So what kind of love story can one conjure about an Englishman and a Chinese woman in Singapore in the 1970s? Read more
- Getting the essentials right (December 28, 2006)
Well, you could call this the "Explore (Essential Services of) Singapore" episode, but that wouldn't necessarily do justice to the range of stories told at the museums featured in this week's episode. There's more to the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery than tales of firemen sliding down ladders (though there's some priceless footage of that). And there's more to hospital museums --- specifically, the ones at the Singapore General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital --- than stethoscopes and narrow old patient beds (though there's one with an interestingly placed, um, hole). - All the art that's fit to view (January 4, 2007)
It's art, art and more art on this week's episode of Explore Singapore!, as the show's characters Sarah Thompson, the occasional artist (played by Elizabeth Tan), and Mr Heng, the occasional author-in-need-of-an-artist (played by Moses Lim), take a break from Singapore's history and heritage spots, and check out all the art museums instead. Yes, art museums --- this may come as a surprise to people like me who didn't realise that there was more than just one permanent art museum in Singapore. Read more
- A little bird told me ... (January 11, 2007)
This week's episode of Explore Singapore! sees Sarah Thompson, the English girl of Singaporean extraction (played by Sarah Elizabeth Tan), uncover the last two clues from her box of heirlooms that might lead to her long-lost mother. A postcard and a doll may not seem like much, but they're packed with enough cultural information and historical context to send her and her pal, former museum curator Mr Heng (played by Moses Lim), journeying through a most unlikely sequence of Singapore museums. - All's explored well that ends well (January 18, 2007)
After five episodes and 20 museums, not to mention a number of false leads and dead ends, Sarah Thompson (played by Elizabeth Tan) finally tracked down her long-lost birth mother's address and telephone number in last week's episode of Explore Singapore! --- only to have the woman refuse to meet Sarah. What's next? One last round of museum visits, of course, as Mr Heng (played by Moses Lim) tries to convince Sarah to stay in Singapore and try to establish contact with her mother. Read more
