Wrong answer, lady

Singapore gets tamer Sex and the City

What's really damning is the following observation by a woman-in-the-street interviewed by the reporter:
Is she upset by the censorship? "No, it's okay. We're used to that," she said.
If you don't insist on better, then you don't have a right to complain on how bad it is. Oh, wait --- she wasn't complaining. Grrrrr. This crystallizes everything that is wrong with this place.

I don't particularly want or need to see Sex and the City, but I'd like to have the choice and not be patronised by an all-knowing government as if I'm a 2-year-old who doesn't know any better.

And I thought waking up with that stupid 'national song' "Home" in my head was bad enough.

Oh, my. So you also thought that comment disturbing too? It IS sad, when we can think about censorship in those terms. Like it doesn't matter. I feel the same way, I am not particularly for or against SATC but people having such a casual attitude to censorship does not bode well for this country, I think.

And that stupid song "HOME"? I can't get it out of my head too. Worse still, I can't get the video of the samfoo children out of my head too. Aarrrrrrggggh!

The problem with H*me (hereafter known as The Song That Shall Not Be Named) is that the moment you mention it to gripe about how bad the song is, and how particularly bad this year's music video is --- the song is implanted in your head for the rest of your waking hours (and possibly harrasses you in your sleep too). I was doing okay, until I read your comment. :) These "national songs" are pernicious little bastards.

So the key, really, is not to deign to even think about The Song That Shall Not Be Named --- we must break this vicious circle!

As for censorship, aiya, what to do? Some of the JC students I used to teach seemed to be more conservative and tight-ass than their parents! So one generation of blase conservatism seems to be breeding another... Just as well I'm going back to teach, so I can tekan those who make ill-thought-out statements like that. Even if I can't change their minds, I can give them a hard time about it.

And now Mr Brown has written in Today about the evilness of The Song That Shall Not Be Named too! Fortunately, he turned it around into a paean to his family, rather than dwelling on the song per se. But that song, I suspect, is firmly grounded in my head for the rest of today...

Heh, so mean.

I can listen to the song without getting it in my head. Yay.
